Frederick J. C. Butler
Managing Director
Frederick J.C. Butler began his career practicing
law in the corporate securities department of DAVIS POLK & WARDWELL
from 1967 through 1969. After one year at BURNHAM AND COMPANY (predecessor
to Drexel, Burnham, Lambert), he joined MERRILL LYNCH. Mr. Butler was
the founding CEO of Merrill Lynch Leasing, Inc. in 1976 and was
responsible for the sale of the company in 1986 for an after-tax profit to Merrill
Lynch of more that $100 million. Mr. Butler headed a large group within Merrill
Lynch Capital Markets that included, at various times, Project and Lease Financing,
the Public Utility Group, Partnership Financing, Venture Capital and the Real
Estate Financing Group, including all of Merrill Lynch's real estate financing,
brokering and advisory operations. While at Merrill Lynch, he served as Chairman
or CEO of numerous special-purpose subsidiaries of Merrill Lynch, formed
to manage Merrill Lynch's interests in retail limited partnerships that invested
in and/or operated businesses in energy, media and leveraged buy-outs. In 1991,
he left Merrill Lynch to co-found BUTLER, CHAPMAN & CO., a private
New York-based investment banking firm that provided mergers and acquisitions
advisory services, private debt and equity placement services, and other investment
banking services to middle market companies and private equity groups. He served
as Chairman and co-CEO of Butler Chapman & Co. since its inception.
Mr. Butler joined Bentley in 2004. He serves on the board of Butler Capital
Corporation, a firm owned by Gilbert Butler that manages money for family foundations
and trusts. He is Chairman of the Board of The William George Agency for Children's
Services, a private, non-profit residential treatment center that provides therapeutic
and rehabilitative services to emotionally disturbed adolescents. Mr. Butler
earned an A.B. from HARVARD COLLEGE and a J.D. from COLUMBIA LAW SCHOOL.
